Street Corner Science has officially been in existence for over a year as a (very) underutilized Twitter account (@StreetCornerSci). It was the brainchild of random conversations with friends that as scientists we should stand on the street corner and "preach" science, like those righteous religious folks on any downtown corner in any large city in the U.S. Instead of pushing fire and brimstone on passers-by, we would drop some facts and information to help make science more accessible.
It turns out we were not the first to have this idea and Street Corner Science already existed as what appears to have been a short-lived video program initiated by the website ScienCentral (which you should check out). It included Nobel Prize winner Leon Lederman sitting down in New York City and Chicago to answer the public's questions about science, which is awesome. The videos can be found on YouTube. Our idea is similar. We want to explain science and basic science principles in an easy to understand way that is accessible to the general public in a virtual format, hence the Twitter account and this blog. We hope the general public and colleagues alike will appreciate our attempt to increase science understanding.
